Zoo Atlanta opened in 1889. A traveling exhibit bound for Marietta, GA was stopped before reaching its destination. The animals began to multiply and businessman George Valentine Gress bought the collection and donated the animals to the city of Atlanta. They were relocated to Grant Park. The years 1951 to 1967 were one of the best periods of construction and restoration of the zoo. In 1961, a baby gorilla joined them, and in 1999, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, a pair of giant pandas on loan from China, arrived at the zoo. The zoo has an area of 40 hectares, 1,500 animals and 220 species. They offer free entry to members of the military.
