The Ajax armored vehicle is prone to "excessive vibration and noise" and the military has suspended testing for several months, according to the BBC. The Ajax is the first large armored vehicle to be acquired by the British Army in more than 20 years.

The 38-tonne, three-crew vehicle is armed with a 40mm cannon that fires new space-saving telescopic ammunition. Ajax is designed to launch, collect information on enemy forces, and engage in combat with opponents when necessary. It is also the first of many vehicles based on the Ajax chassis, including Ares (armored personnel carrier), Argus (engineer), Athena (command and control) and others.

Overall, the British Army plans to buy 589 vehicles based on the Ajax platform, divided into at least seven variants. Unfortunately, the design flaws found in early Ajax vehicles are reportedly so serious that the British Army suspended trials last year due to health concerns for soldiers interacting with the vehicles.

The Ajax also cannot reverse over obstacles 20 centimeters (7.87 in) high, and the vehicle has suspension problems that prevent the new 40 mm gun from firing while moving. Because of these and other problems, the British Army limited soldiers to being in the vehicle for only 105 minutes at a time and limited the vehicle to a speed of just 20 miles per hour.

Ajax is a descendant of the Spanish-Austrian ASCOD armored vehicle, reinforced with additional armor. The BBC reports that the extra armor, which increased the vehicle's weight to 38 tons, is to blame for many of the problems identified.

The British Ministry of Defense and the arms company General Dynamics are jointly investigating the problems. According to the U.K. Defense Journal, the British military still plans for Ajax to reach its first operational capability this summer.
