cadex 50 bmg

Cadex 50 Bmg - The Cadex CDX-50 Tremor is designed to deliver .50 BMG loads with high precision. The latest addition to the Tremor family is a compact 20" barrel designed for law enforcement and military applications. Built using Canadian and American components, the Tremor line has the advantage of extreme distance. Eager to see how this rifle would perform in civilian hands, Cadex was kind enough to send a new 20" Tremor rifle for review.

The Tremor has a folding stand that allows for all adjustments to your needs. It includes an adjustable butt pad, pull length and cheek rest. All of these adjustments are completely tool-free and very simple. There is a removable picatinny rail on the bottom of the buttstock that can be swapped out for a pouch drive.

The triggers are Cadex's own DX2 Evo selectable single/dual stage triggers. This allows the shooter to switch the trigger from a two-stage factory to a single stage depending on the shooter's preference. The weight of the application can be quickly adjusted between 1.5 and 2.5 lbs using the provided Allen key. The entire bottom of the receiver can also be removed using the supplied Allen key. This allows for easier access to the full trigger assembly across the entire tuning range.

In front of the magazine and magazine release is a two-screw attachment point on the receiver. This allows attachment of a bipod rail, ARCA tripod adapter or RC2 tripod adapter. This attachment point on the receiver is a nice design feature that allows for a wider range of lateral and elevation adjustments.

The CDX-50 Tremor comes with a steel five-round magazine. With locking lugs front and rear, the magazine is very solidly constructed and very easy to load and install. The two-tab design allows the magnet to be inserted directly into the receiver. Two clicks indicate that the magazine is fully seated.

Below the dedicated Mirage control tube, there is a 1:15 helically threaded Bartlein match barrel. This design helps direct the latent heat of the barrel away from the optics, reducing ghosting and image distortion as the barrel heats up.

On the end of the Tremor's 20.6" barrel is a Cadex MX1 muzzle brake. Made of 416 stainless steel, this three-chambered design is designed to reduce recoil without creating excessive powder during dive shots.

The Tremor 50 uses a safety mechanism mounted directly on the bolt assembly. When the safety is engaged, the bolt is locked in this position and cannot be cycled.

The safety has a pretty heavy tab, but it pops out of the safety easily when you're ready to fire. It's a different design that I like, but it definitely took some getting used to.

The bolt on the Tremor is a distinguishing feature when holding a rifle. This is the smoothest bolt action I have ever experienced in a bolt action rifle. Even though the bolt weighs only 2.26 lbs, the bolt opens and fires almost effortlessly.

Bolt removal is simple and efficient for disassembly and repair. Once the stock is folded 90 degrees, it can be removed from the receiver simply by pulling back while pushing the bolt.

The folding stock on the Tremor opens by pulling back on the hinge, pushing the stock to the left of the receiver. Two white polyurethane spacers on the top and bottom of the hinge assembly eliminate any movement. This gives the mount a very smooth, soft closing feel when locking the stock.

The stock makes a very pleasant click when the lock is opened or closed. Throughout the review process, the elegance of this hinge mechanism never ceased to amaze me.

The 20" CDX Tremor has an overall length of just 37" with the stock folded. This is perfect for transporting and storing it in smaller, tighter spaces.

Cadex was kind enough to send their factory softshells and custom hardshells for Tremor to review.

Their factory hardshell is a Nanuk 990 with custom cut box foam and I was very impressed. The case has a hinged lock-open flap with spare magazine storage and built-in locking lugs (and four additional external locking points). This is a great way to securely transport your Tremor while browsing.

The .50 BMG is nothing new in terms of caliber, but its popularity is well deserved. Entering service in 1921, the .50 BMG has been in military use for 100 years and remains one of the most effective cartridges in use by the military today.

This enlarged .30-06 Springfield cartridge is available for civilian use and is available in a variety of casings. Everything from the Hornady A-MAX to simple pellet ammo to armor piercing incendiaries. If you want the widest variety of bullet types, the .50 BMG is the way to go. Ball ammo (far left) cost me $2.65 in 2020, cheaper than the .300 Win Mag ammo at my local sporting goods store.

I like to take this rifle to the range a few times before grouping it for accuracy. This will give me a nice copper colored finish on the barrel while getting used to the recoil on the back of the rifle.

I found the recoil very manageable as I was ready for more recoil. As pictured, the rifle weighs only 26.6 lbs (a very light .50 BMG for bolt action), and the MX1 muzzle brake does a great job dampening recoil. All without a giant dust cloud and backfired.

Thanks to the short bolt range, smooth bolt and very controllable recoil, it's super easy to run through bullets quickly. After many trips to the range and over a hundred rounds, it was time to see how accurate this Tremor 50 was on paper.

Featuring a 1.050 G1 (or 1.1 G7) ballistic coefficient and extremely high endurance, the Hornady 750 grain A-MAX is the gold standard in .50 BMG bullets.

Hornady kindly sponsored the research and sent some factory A-MAX ammunition. Additionally, a loadout was developed specifically for this rifle with the help of .50 BMG enthusiast Mike Pappas.

With the factory set of 5 wheels on paper, I continued to work on each collection of carry-on luggage. Taking measurements in each case to eliminate possible variables will allow me to find the sweet spot for the shorter 20.6" barrel.

If you've never used a .50 BMG shortgun in a tunnel, then I certainly wouldn't recommend doing it very often. Apparently, I was able to "rock the lounge" upstairs at TNT Guns and Range during these shoots.

Final result? Average 0.76 MOA group with factory Hornady A-MAX loaded ammo and total 0.68 MOA with hand loaded A-MAX group. Not bad considering all the microvibrations I gave myself during testing.

Over the next few weeks, a skilled .50 BMG shooter was able to place a 3-round group at 100 yards (above right) measuring just 0.52 MOA, this time using only loose 660 gr pellet ammunition.

While the 20" version of the CDX-50 isn't exactly optimized for extended range, I decided to push the rifle a little further and see what it could do.

An undisclosed location in Wyoming would serve as the perfect remote proving ground for this rifle. Using Hornady's 4DOF ballistic calculator, I set my sights on the 8" plate at 800 yards.

With target sizes as low as 1MOA, there is no room for error. So, after having to give Wind a little favor, I managed to make devastating contact with the board. The 750 grain A-MAX leaves the barrel at 2,527 fps producing 10,633 foot-pounds of energy and hits steel at 1,842 fps producing 5,650 foot-pounds of energy. Those poor target chains with steel never stood a chance.

Feeling both admiring and sorry (these weren't my steel targets), I decided to use my remaining ammo to clear and scatter a few pebbles over 1,000 yards away (instead of tearing more steel off the chain). Needless to say, I was impressed with the accuracy and repeatability of this setup, especially in this shorter barrel configuration.

Everything about this CDX-50, from the chassis to the magazine, is absolutely incredible. The bolt rides on the glass, and even when it's dirty, the Bartlein barrel consistently groups whatever ammo I put in. I spent hours looking at this rifle, looking for things I didn't like, only to come up empty handed. Almost empty handed.

Since the safety can only be closed with the bolt closed, there is no way to cycle with the safety closed. The design is certainly not dangerous, but having to load a .50 BMG with the safety off takes some getting used to.

As you can imagine, the Cadex CDX-50 Tremor isn't cheap, with an MSRP of $8,069.95. The rifle configured in the photo above will set you back about $12,000. Although the base price tag
