Slat and bar mounted weapons are the lightest and cheapest way to counter RPGs, although they can really take a hit or miss defense if used correctly. The spacing of bars or slats is very important. It makes little difference if the rocket hits the bar, because its warhead explodes anyway. But if it remains between the bars it will probably be damaged in some way such that the signal from the nose-mounted fuse cannot reach the detonator.
This method is called a statistical weapon, because the protection it offers is all or nothing. This is generally considered to have a 50% chance of defeating an incoming RPG. But Dr Appleby-Thomas points out that it only works against nose-fired munitions, which Javelins, NLAW and MAM-L lack.
Russia has been putting armor on the vehicles since 2016, but the design of the new cages, made from locally available materials, is confusing. They seem to be managed in such a way as to protect only against attacks from above. In principle, this helps against javelins, which have a "top attack" mode in which they first move up and then penetrate thin tank armor. But, as Nick Reynolds, a ground warfare research analyst at British defense think tank RUSI, points out, even if the Cage outperforms the Javelin's first warhead, the main payload is still powerful enough to work through most armor. And destroy a tank — as the Ukrainian military proved itself in December, when it tested one against a vehicle protected by an armor plate replicating a Russian design. Another idea is that the cage is a response to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020, in which a large number of Russian Armenian tanks MAM-L. destroyed But Samuel Cranney-Evans, another analyst at RUSI, points out that the MAM-L's lack of a nose fuse will make adding cages a failure. A third possibility is that the cage was used as protection against RPGs (which the Ukrainians have in abundance) fired at the tanks from above. This is rarely the case on open battlefields but is the preferred tactic in urban warfare, where buildings provide the necessary height for snipers.
While that may be true, it comes at a price. Patrick Benham-Craswell, a former tank officer in the British Army and author of "The Dangerous World of Tommy Atkins: An Introduction to Land Warfare", notes that the cage limits the capability of the turret-mounted machine gun. So Dr Appleby-Thomas speculates that the real purpose of the cages is to protect against small, improvised explosive devices launched by drones. But cages slow down such attacks rather than provide complete protection, as they form a partial screen over the cage and completely expose other areas.
A final possibility is that the jibes about the cages being emotional support armor are actually true, and are only added to improve morale and convince soldiers that they are safe. As Mr Benham-Craswell points out, soldiers often take the view that every little bit helps.
