cage and tank

Cage And Tank - Many of the Russian tanks that participated in the invasion of Ukraine had strange cages welded to their turret roofs. Many images have emerged of wrecked vehicles surrounded by them - strange and apparently worthless. Sometimes the cage is visibly damaged by an attack hitting the tank below.

Stijn Mitzer, an independent analyst based in Amsterdam, has seen hundreds of authenticated photos of Russian-made vehicles. They feel that the cages did nothing but act as protection, add weight, make the tanks easier to see and give the crew a false sense of security. Hence they are ironically referred to by some Western analysts as "emotional support shields" or "fighting cages".

Apparently, this is an example of what in military circles is called field-fit armor - in other words, things added to vehicles after they enter service. In general, field suits are ideal supporters. Gareth Appleby-Thomas, head of the UK's Cranfield University's Center for Defense Engineering, sees it spread over the years from sandbags to armor plates attached to the outside of (and often crude) tanks, to the factory. - Manufactured upgrade kits

New cages, starting in late 2021, are a variant of slat or bar cages. If used properly (for example, in the US Stryker armored personnel carriers) it provides effective light protection. But it seems that was not the case in this case. So they could be seen as signs of Russia's ill-preparedness for the campaign, including its failure to neutralize Ukraine's air defenses and shoot down that country's drones.

The main threats to armored vehicles are HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) weapons, such as the Russian-made but widely used RPG-7. The warheads of these rocket-propelled grenades are shaped charges - hollow cones of metal-covered explosives. When the explosive detonates, it blasts the metal strip into a narrow, fast jet that can cut through thick steel. According to Dr Appleby-Thomas RPG-7 steel plate can penetrate 30cm.

And infants of the RPG-7 group. Other more powerful anti-tank weapons used by Ukrainian forces include American-supplied Javelins, British-supplied NLAW (Next Generation Light Anti-Tank Weapons) and Turkish-supplied MAM-L missiles.

HEAT warheads can be countered by what is known as Explosive Reactive Armor or ERA. When struck, the incoming warhead detonates and destroys the explosive blade stored within it before detonating. Many Russian tanks actually depend on the era. However, the ERA can be defeated by such a tandem warhead, in which a small pre-charge destroys the armor-piercing explosive before the main warhead detonates.

Slat and bar mounted weapons are the lightest and cheapest way to counter RPGs, although they can really take a hit or miss defense if used correctly. The spacing of bars or slats is very important. It makes little difference if the rocket hits the bar, because its warhead explodes anyway. But if it remains between the bars it will probably be damaged in some way such that the signal from the nose-mounted fuse cannot reach the detonator.

This method is called a statistical weapon, because the protection it offers is all or nothing. This is generally considered to have a 50% chance of defeating an incoming RPG. But Dr Appleby-Thomas points out that it only works against nose-fired munitions, which Javelins, NLAW and MAM-L lack.

Russia has been putting armor on the vehicles since 2016, but the design of the new cages, made from locally available materials, is confusing. They seem to be managed in such a way as to protect only against attacks from above. In principle, this helps against javelins, which have a "top attack" mode in which they first move up and then penetrate thin tank armor. But, as Nick Reynolds, a ground warfare research analyst at British defense think tank RUSI, points out, even if the Cage outperforms the Javelin's first warhead, the main payload is still powerful enough to work through most armor. And destroy a tank — as the Ukrainian military proved itself in December, when it tested one against a vehicle protected by an armor plate replicating a Russian design. As expected the Javelin easily destroyed the target.

Another idea is that the cage is a response to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020, in which a large number of Russian Armenian tanks MAM-L. destroyed But Samuel Cranney-Evans, another analyst at RUSI, points out that the MAM-L's lack of a nose fuse will make adding cages a failure. Hitting the cage may cause the warhead to detonate quickly, but Mr Cranny-Evans does not believe this will stop the tank from being destroyed.

A third possibility is that the cage was used as protection against RPGs (which the Ukrainians have in abundance) fired at the tanks from above. This is rarely the case on open battlefields but is the preferred tactic in urban warfare, where buildings provide the necessary height for snipers.

While that may be true, it comes at a price. Patrick Benham-Craswell, a former tank officer in the British Army and author of "The Dangerous World of Tommy Atkins: An Introduction to Land Warfare", notes that the cage limits the capability of the turret-mounted machine gun. Roll around to confuse enemies shooting at the vehicle.

So Dr Appleby-Thomas speculates that the real purpose of the cages is to protect against small, improvised explosive devices launched by drones. Ukraine has developed munitions based on hand-launched anti-tank grenades, with munitions attached so they can be accurately launched by commercial drones. These drone bombs can pose a real threat in urban areas. But cages slow down such attacks rather than provide complete protection, as they form a partial screen over the cage and completely expose other areas.

A final possibility is that the jibes about the cages being emotional support armor are actually true, and are only added to improve morale and convince soldiers that they are safe. As Mr Benham-Craswell points out, soldiers often take the view that every little bit helps.

However, believing you are safe does not equate to actually being safe. A specific historical phrase is found in the spirit dance robes believed to have supernatural powers to stop bullets, worn by some Lakota warriors in rebellion against the American government in 1889 and 1890. It certainly improved morale. But he didn't save his actions in Wounded Knee. ■

Cope cages are slang for slat armor, also known as RPG cages, designed for Russian T-90 tanks and other vehicles in the 2021-2022 Russia-Ukraine war. Although the armor is used by many armed forces around the world for various military vehicles, the term "coop cages" became the subject of memes in early 2022 to mock the Russian military and its attempts to cross into Ukraine. to their ineffectiveness against weapons used by the Ukrainian military, such as the Javelin missile. The nickname appears in the Wage Cage and Copium memes.

Alex Kochcharov, a London-based country risk analyst focusing on Russia and Ukraine, posted a tweet revealing a TikTok video reposted by a now-deleted user. Kokcharov tweeted that the video was filmed in Russian-occupied Crimea and shows a Russian tank with some type of armor specifically designed to protect against surface-to-surface attacks such as ATGMs. In pro-Ukraine films like St. The tweet (shown below) has nearly 164,100 views and over 500 likes in four months.
